Artfest 2014 Judge’s Comments

Paper Category and Photography/Digital:

1st “The Fall” by Kate Lagaly - Good creativity and techniques.

2nd “Gracie & Amazing” by Carol J. Hollinger - Wonderful use of lost and found and soft edges.  Very fresh and tender.

3rd “Life in the Wood” by Jackie Balog - Incredible and masterful techniques.  Love the contrast of the flowers.  I find it a bit busy, but intriguing.

HM “Look at That!” by Kay Mowery - Wonderful use of contrasting color and composition.  Find I wanted a bit of softness.  Wonderful shadows under the women.

HM “Kitchen” by Judy Ferree - Terrific clarity and warm nostalgia.

HM “The Vine” by Bill Ferree - Terrific subject and color.  Intent of the vine - I would have expected more of a close-up of the vine because I was drawn to the window, but fabulous.

“Jingles” by Cynthia Graham - Good texturing.  Would like to see a few soft edges.

“Sunset off St. Vincent by Kay Mowery - Terrific reflections and great sky.

“Farm at Dawn” by Bill Ferree - Fabulous mood and warm colors.

“Elegance on the Wind” by Jackie Balog - Fabulous texturing and work, a bit busy.

“Sing and Be Happy” by Aaron Casteel - Terrific linework.  Background pencil marks are distracting.

“Lane in Snow” by Judy Ferree - Awesome.  Wonderful composition, and good use of black & white.  Misty background and road leads me deep into the picture.

“The King” by Cynthia Graham - Nice job.  Needs more softening to texture.  Great drawing.

“Look Up” by Lelia Brigham - Nicely done.  Love the texture and format.

Sculpture Category:

1st “Dolphins” by Gina Browning - Outstanding.

2nd “Tiny Dancer” by Wanda G. Satterwhite - Wonderful, colorful, creative, and appealing.

3rd “Egalitarian” by Don Marlowe - Good, simple statement.

HM “Deep Night of Lightning” by Mickie Reitzel - Creative and nicely presented.

“Untitled” by Katherine Kubicek - Nicely done and creative.  Good juxtaposition of flowers and remains.

“Untitled (Rare Breed #1)” by Katherine Kubicek - Nicely done and creative, wonderful coloring.  Good juxtaposition of flowers and remains.

“Contemplatation” by Don Marlowe - Good, simple statement.

“Gum Leaf Gecko” 2 pc. by Gina Browning - Very fine work.

Hard Surface:

B in S “Self Reflection” by Kate Lagaly - Outstanding, masterful techniques and textures. Brilliant contrasts. Super presentation, mood, everything.

1st “Happy Day” by Herena Eom - Nicely done and executed.  Terrific textures.  Nice title and contrasting rain view.

2nd “Mountain Cabin” by   Mary J Oakley - Appealing, good colors and contrasts.  Would like to see mountains more abstracted.

3rd “Blue Barn” by Wanda G. Satterwhite - Wonderfully colorful and imaginative.

HM “Guardians” by Adrienne Knowles - Marvelous collage and texture elements.  Love the colors.

HM “2 & 10,000 Times Bound” by T.J Shelly - Terrific contrasts and shadows.  Good use of light.  Straight tree in the middle a bit ‘off’ to me.

“Trust the Celebration” by Chrystal Hardt - Wonderful colors.  Clearly celebratory.

“Enchantment” by Chrystal Hardt - Colorful.  Reminds me of folk art.

“Beach Weekend” by Adrienne Knowles - Textured, well imagined and executed.  I like the abstracted colors.

“Sweet Spring” by Herena Eom - Wonderfully exuberant and celebratory.  Would like to have seen a clear center of interest.

“Little Spring Trio” by Lelia Brigham - Very nicely done.  Like the diamond presentation.

“Pot of Mums” by Mary J Oakley - Good use of light on the pot.  Flowers could use a bit more variation in the petals.

“The Swan Ship” by Carol J. Hollinger - I found the swan and ship elements a bit hard to see until I read the title.  Very creative.

“The Love of Fall” by Mickie Reitzel - Good colors.  Unsure if center of interest were birches, if so, I found they needed a bit more color - blue/grey/brown to be a bit clearer.  Nicely done.

“Ouch” by Joe DiBona - Very creative.  Good symbolism.
